Book review: 50 Shades of Kink, by Tristan Taormino
Written by an award-winning author, columnist, editor, filmmaker, and sex educator, 50 Shades of Kink is a primer for those who are interested in kink and want to know more about it, get some ideas, and learn how to negotiate and begin exploring. And yes, it was written in response to the phenomenon of the 50 Shades of Grey books .
It addresses some common myths about kink, and explains how to share
fantasies, talk about role play, and communicate your needs and desires, while providing ideas, tips, tricks and techniques along the way. BDSM basics, such as terminology, roles, concepts (consent, negotiation, limits, safety, risk, personal responsibility, aftercare) are covered.
There are explanations and ideas for different types of play, including:
- D/s and power dynamics
- sexual power games (orgasm control and denial)
- sensory deprivation
- sensation play
- bondage
- impact play
- rough sex
Included is a list of ‘50 items for your toy bag’, a reading list of fiction and non-fiction books, and a sample of a ‘yes/no/maybe’ checklist.
Overall, the book is very readable and approachable, and uses clear and informal language, making it a good title for beginners. It has no index (one of my big pet peeves with non-fiction books!) but at only 140 pages, it’s easy to find what you’re looking for. This book can easily be read within a few hours and would be a great starting point for people who are thinking about exploring some kink.
Conclusion: a very basic introduction, best for those who are brand-new to kink and have not tried much, or anything, yet.
