Anal Fisting

Anal fisting is a sexual act in which a persons anus is stretched in order to accommodate the human fist. The goal is actually to help the sphincters relax so that the stretching is not forced or harmful.

Anal fisting came to prominence in the 1980’s, as some of San Francisco’s gay clubs became known for the practice which spread through the largely ‘underground’ gay community. It was believed that anal fisting was a contributor to the spread of AIDS throughout the community, as fisting can result in anal fissures due to stretching. Despite it’s popularity among gay men, fisting can also be practiced and enjoyed by women.

WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE ANAL FISTING?

There is an abundance of nerve endings in the anal region, which means that stimulation of the anus can actually be quite pleasurable. Fisting also accomplishes a feeling of ‘fullness’ which many people crave. In addition, men often also enjoy the stimulation of their prostate by the fingers.

TECHNIQUE

If you’re interested in attempting anal fisting, we should probably show you what you’re dealing with anatomy-wise. As you can see, beyond the anal cavity is the rectum, and beyond that is the sigmoid colon.

A person who wishes to engage in anal fisting will usually take great care to empty the colon by defecating or by taking and releasing an enema.

Since the rectum and colon are not self lubricating, one must take care to use sufficient amounts of lubrication. Some popular lubricants use by people who engage in anal fisting are: albolene, jojoba oil, xanthan gum mixed with water, crisco, J-lube, and other oil-based lubes. Water-based lubes are not recommended, as the moisture will eventually absorb into the tissue.

In order to successfully engage in anal fisting, the bottom must attempt to relax their anus and rectum to allow the fingers to enter. It’s also important to keep in mind that fisting is not something that the vast majority of people can succeed at the first time. It generally takes a lot of anal play and gradually working up to achieve the relaxation required for the anus to

stretch enough for five fingers to pass through. Typically, the fister will begin with one or two fingers, then as each new finger is inserted their hand will form into a ‘silent duck’ shape.  Despite the name, the top shouldn’t be making a balled fist for insertion.

Along the way, the bottom should be cognizant of the sensations they are experiencing. Fisting causes a feeling of being stretched, and there might be some associated pain, but there is a difference between “Yikes! That’s uncomfortable!” and the pain that signals that some harm might be taking place. The pain or discomfort will also be dependant on how relaxed the bottom is during the entire process.

The colon does not follow a straight path, and the ‘fister’ should take care not

to force their way inside, but rather attempt to follow the natural curves as much as possible. It is actually possible to insert the entire forearm up to the elbow with enough training.

RISKS OF ANAL FISTING

Any medical professional will tell you that anal fisting carries with it a risk of causing anal fissures (a cut or tear in the anus), as does anal sex. Improper technique or excessive force can also result in a perforated colon. For that reason, I’d recommend that you NOT use desensitizing creams such as Anal Eaze. Pain is your bodies best detector of discomfort, and is a great warning system against harm.

GAPING

One of the things that people seem to find so hot about anal fisting is the

ability of the anal sphincter to remain in a state of relaxation once the ‘fist’ (or another object) has been removed. This is known as ‘gaping’. Some people are able to relax enough during anal sex or fisting to allow the sphincter to gape, basically on command. Gaping isn’t always something people find easy to do, however.

WANT TO TRY FISTING?

It can be done safely, as long as you’re going slowly, with lots of lube, and keeping your own ‘warning bells’ in mind! Light some candles, put on some music, grab some lube, and start working up from one finger to the next!

At the time of this writing, more than 6,200 people on FetLife.com have listed anal fisting as a fetish that they are ‘into’ or ‘curious about’!
